CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence for Green Technology (CEGT) was established in January 2013 with the strong support of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Based on the platform of the Institute of Process Engineering (IPE), CAS and the fundamental goal of "promoting TWAS green technology talent training, scientific and technological cooperation and promoting the sustainable development of TWAS green technology". With "the Belt and Road" strategy is being put forward, CEGT is responding positively to the call, focusing on the major needs of the countries along "the Belt and Road", strengthening the cooperation with many countries in terms of technology and talents, and building joint laboratories/research centers, so as to realize the green technologies transformation and transfer. As a result, a green technology alliance with important international influence has been established, making it a communication link and bridge in the field of green technology between countries and regions.
1、Technology transfer and transformation
Since CEGT established, focused on the green technology transfer and transformation, especially the technology cooperation with "the Belt and Road" countries. Using the CEGT advanced bio metallurgical technology, the largest copper hydrometallurgy industrial plant in Asia (50000 T/a) has been built in Myanmar, realizing stable operation and greatly driving the employment of Myanmar personnel (more than 90% of the personnel come from Myanmar), which has become a model of China Myanmar cooperation and the largest project invested by China in Myanmar at present. In addition, cooperated with Mongolia, our copper smelting tail gas utilization technology was used to solve the worldwide problem of tail gas treatment in the smelting process of strategic metals such as copper and aluminum. Through collaborative research, CEGT has further expanded its technical cooperation with Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and other countries: cooperated with Thailand, Malaysia and other southeast Asian countries to develop new green technologies for biofuels and degradable bio based materials; cooperated with Saudi Aramco to develop new technologies for direct preparation of chemicals from crude oil and seek a new way for crude oil utilization; developed artemisinin extraction and application technology with Sudan. CEGT provides effective technical support for the scientific and technological development of developing countries and promotes the construction of a green and innovative development road.
2. High end talent training
CEGT has gradually established a management mechanism for targeted training of foreign students based on the scientific research needs of sub centers and joint laboratories, so as to lay a solid talent foundation for the scientific and technological development in the field of green technology in developing countries. So far, a total of 75 graduate students from developing countries such as Pakistan, Nigeria, Thailand, India, Bangladesh and Egypt have been enrolled. The return of foreign students plays an important role in promoting the development of green technology in their countries and the future scientific and technological cooperation with China.
3. Establishment of joint laboratories and sharing platforms
CEGT carries out in-depth scientific and technological cooperation with developing countries through joint project research, cooperation platform sharing, joint talent training and other forms to enhance the scientific and technological innovation capacity of developing countries. To actively respond to "the Belt and Road" initiatives, CEGT actively promotes technological cooperation with the relevant countries, enhances the influence and sustainability of science and technology, focuses on the construction of international joint laboratories/centers, personnel training and cultivating, and technology research. At present, China-Myanmar-Mongolia-Congo green mineral international joint laboratory, China-Thailand-Malaysia renewable energy international joint laboratory, China-Saudi Arabia-Pakistan petroleum joint center, China-Egypt green technology joint laboratory, China-Denmark green process research center, China -UK waste PET cycle research center and China-Sudan artemisinin natural drug research center have been established. The establishment of the international joint laboratory not only includes relevant universities and institutes, but also has received strong support from relevant national enterprises, such as PTTGC (Thailand's largest oil company), SCG, Wanbao minerals (Myanmar) company, Malaysia innovation center, ARAMCO, Sinopec Saudi Arabia, etc. A complete industrial chain of talent training, joint R&D, technology transfer and transformation has been formed. The joint laboratories/centers will be the important support and base for international cooperation in technology, technology transfer and personnel training between "the Belt and Road" countries. In addition, with the support of IGTA, a high-end think tank with outstanding scientists in the field of green technology from many countries in the world will be established. Combined with local resources and energy characteristics, CEGT could provide technical consulting services, write and publish consulting reports according to the different needs of regions, countries and industries, so as to provide strategic guidance for governments and enterprises in developing countries in green technology.
4. Hold a high-end Green Technology Forum
CEGT carries out academic exchanges and seminars, and takes the conference as the starting point to drive scientific and technology cooperation. CEGT has held more than 10 high-end green technology forums, attracting more than 3000 participants, including more than 800 scholars and young scientific and technological personnel from developing countries, which has an important international impact. At present, the green technology forum held by CEGT has become an important platform for the exchange of scientists and scientific and technological personnel in developing countries, and has been widely praised.
